Appearance in Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung

My exhibition @ Bookshop Dominicanen in Maastricht had an incognito and minuscule appearance in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"Hanging around" on a Saturday evening ...

Short film I made of the interior of former church and now Bookshop Dominicanen in Maastricht just after I had completed the hanging of the works on display at my exhibition there. It was quite an experience to stand in this beautiful building all alone on a Saturday evening after closing time.

Beetje "rondhangen" op een zaterdagavond ...

Korte film van het interieur van de voormalige Dominicanerkerk - nu Boekhandel Dominicanen - in Maastricht, net nadat ik de ophanging van de werken voor mijn tentoonstelling daar had voltooid. Het was een bijzondere ervaring om na sluitingstijd op een zaterdagavond alleen in dit prachtige gebouw te staan.

Exhibition "10x10artist"

On Saturday the first "10x10artist" exhibition by Atelier Open was opened in Amsterdam. 10x10artist is an art project set up by gallery Atelier Open in Amsterdam focused on offering a varied selection of artworks by international artists on 10 x 10 cm sized canvasses. The art works are exhibited during special occasions, starting in Amsterdam, then traveling to other places and countries. The works also are on display on the 10x10artist website. I participated with my "Visages Nuages" series, small abstracted portraits in ink drawn/painted with a feather, shown below.

Exhibition "My Past"

This evening the group exhibition with the theme "My past" was opened in the town hall of Landgraaf. It consists of a presentation of art works created by students at the local art school (VAZOM). My entry titled "Leenhof Chapel: Childhood memories through coloured glasses" is a diptych of paintings I did in 2012 in an expressionist style of an early 17th century chapel which lies very picturesquely on top of a hill in the middle of the woods, known as the "Leenderkapel". As a child I played in its surrounding woods and in my teens I attended the secondary school built on the edge of those woods. Vanavond werd de groepsexpositie "Mijn verleden" in het raadhuis van Landgraaf. De expositie bestaat uit een presentatie van werken gemaakt door cursisten van het locale centrum voor de kunsten (Vrije Akademie ZOM). Mijn bijdrage, getiteld "Leenderkapel: Jeugdherinneringen door een gekleurde bril", is een tweeluik van schilderijen die ik in 2012 in een expressionistische stijl maakte van de "Leenderkapel", een pittoresk kapelletje op de top van een heuvel midden in een bos in Landgraaf. Als kind speelde ik in de omliggende bossen en in mijn tienerjaren ging ik naar de middelbare school die aan de bosrand was gevestigd.

Exhibition "Alphons Winters prize 2014"

This evening the first of six regional exhibitions for the biannual Alphons Winters prize was opened in the town hall of Kerkrade. I was pleased to have my entry "(Sur)Real Reflections" selected for this first round exhibition. In the upcoming weeks a selection committee will select works from the regional exhibitions for the second round final exhibition in Maastricht later this year. Vanavond werd de eerste van zes regionale tentoonstellingen voor de tweejaarlijkse Alphons Wintersprijs geopend in het raadhuis van Kerkrade. Ik was blij met de selectie van mijn inzending "(Sur)Reële Reflecties" voor deze eerste ronde tentoonstelling. In de komende weken zal een selectiecommissie werken uit de regionale tentoonstellingen selecteren voor de eindtentoonstelling in Maastricht.

Reflections on an Artist's Dream

This is my main entry for an exhibition of artwork created using an iPad or other similar mobile tablet device, employing the theme of "Secrets & Stories" as their source of inspiration at West Ox Arts Gallery in Oxford (UK). The Secrets & Stories-based theme behind this work is that of an artist and his passion for and entanglement with his subject. The concept could of course refer to any artist and subject. This work however specifically is about Oxford-based artist and friend Martin Beek, who over the last year has submerged himself in the process of portraying a vast array of landscape views in the Oxford area. I used an earlier iPad-portrait drawing of Martin to represent the artist himself. Then mirrored it with its preliminary sketch combined with a collage of an iPad-landscape drawing I recently did of a sunlit autumn woodland to depict the artist's dream, the entanglement with his subject and the process of getting to grips with it: a mind spinning with images and impressions, an eye both catching and caught by the light, an artists's path, fragmented, anything but straightforward. I titled it "Reflections on an Artist's Dream (A Wider Picture - Martin Beek Diptych)"; the subtitle could of course refer to the expanded width in terms of a diptych portrait, but particularly is meant as a hint to David Hockney's "A Bigger Picture" which over the last year has been one of Martin's sources of inspiration. Mijn bijdrage voor een groepsexpositie met het thema "Geheimen & Verhalen" van werken gemaakt met behulp van een iPad of een ander soortgelijk mobiel tablet-apparaat.

Exhibition "Mirror"

This evening, the group exhibition with the theme "Mirror" in the town hall of Kerkrade was festively opened. It consists of a presentation of art works created by students at the local art school (VAZOM) and displays a wide and interesting variety of interpretations on the theme. Here's me beside my entry titled "(Sur)Real Reflections", based on a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels as described in a previous post. Op vrijdagavond werd de groepsexpositie "Kunstbespiegelingen" in het raadhuis van Kerkrade geopend door de wethouder van cultuur. De expositie bestaat uit een presentatie van werken gemaakt door cursisten van het locale centrum voor de kunsten (Vrije Akademie ZOM) met als thema "Spiegel". Mijn bijdrage, getiteld "(Sur)Reële Reflecties", is gebaseerd op een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel zoals beschreven in een eerdere post.

Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections (2)

Final version of a painting that I made during the portrait & model class for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror", not based on life drawing and painting, but on a figure/subject of one's own choice from a photo. I chose a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels. After doing a few colour studies as described in a previous post I started on the painting and this is the result just before I had to submit. Acrylic on canvas (70 x 90 cm) with a copy of the original photo pasted in. Portret & model-tekenen/schilderen was gedurende een aantal weken gericht op het maken van werken met als thema "Spiegel" voor een aanstaande groepsexpositie, dit keer niet naar model, maar op basis van een figuur of onderwerp naar eigen keuze. Ik koos hiertoe een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel. Na het maken van enkele kleurenstudies zoals beschreven in een eerdere post ben ik begonnen aan het schilderij. Bijgaand het resultaat vlak voordat ik het moest inleveren.

Queen Elizabeth II

Quick sketch of Queen Elizabeth II from a photo I came across on the internet for an exhibition at West Ox Arts Gallery in Oxford (UK). Artists were invited to submit portraits of the Queen in the context her upcoming Diamond Jubilee. Although I'm not a monarchist, I enjoyed participating in this portrait event and seeing the entries of other portraitists. Wax pastel on grained paper (21 x 21 cm). Snelle schets van de Britse koningin Elizabeth II voor een expositie in Oxford, georganiseerd door een plaatselijk kunstcollectief in verband met haar diamanten jubileum. Waspastels.
