Exhibition "Alphons Winters prize 2014"

This evening the first of six regional exhibitions for the biannual Alphons Winters prize was opened in the town hall of Kerkrade. I was pleased to have my entry "(Sur)Real Reflections" selected for this first round exhibition. In the upcoming weeks a selection committee will select works from the regional exhibitions for the second round final exhibition in Maastricht later this year. Vanavond werd de eerste van zes regionale tentoonstellingen voor de tweejaarlijkse Alphons Wintersprijs geopend in het raadhuis van Kerkrade. Ik was blij met de selectie van mijn inzending "(Sur)Reële Reflecties" voor deze eerste ronde tentoonstelling. In de komende weken zal een selectiecommissie werken uit de regionale tentoonstellingen selecteren voor de eindtentoonstelling in Maastricht.

Self-Portrait Sketch

Exhibition "Mirror"

This evening, the group exhibition with the theme "Mirror" in the town hall of Kerkrade was festively opened. It consists of a presentation of art works created by students at the local art school (VAZOM) and displays a wide and interesting variety of interpretations on the theme. Here's me beside my entry titled "(Sur)Real Reflections", based on a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels as described in a previous post. Op vrijdagavond werd de groepsexpositie "Kunstbespiegelingen" in het raadhuis van Kerkrade geopend door de wethouder van cultuur. De expositie bestaat uit een presentatie van werken gemaakt door cursisten van het locale centrum voor de kunsten (Vrije Akademie ZOM) met als thema "Spiegel". Mijn bijdrage, getiteld "(Sur)Reële Reflecties", is gebaseerd op een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel zoals beschreven in een eerdere post.

Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections (2)

Final version of a painting that I made during the portrait & model class for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror", not based on life drawing and painting, but on a figure/subject of one's own choice from a photo. I chose a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels. After doing a few colour studies as described in a previous post I started on the painting and this is the result just before I had to submit. Acrylic on canvas (70 x 90 cm) with a copy of the original photo pasted in. Portret & model-tekenen/schilderen was gedurende een aantal weken gericht op het maken van werken met als thema "Spiegel" voor een aanstaande groepsexpositie, dit keer niet naar model, maar op basis van een figuur of onderwerp naar eigen keuze. Ik koos hiertoe een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel. Na het maken van enkele kleurenstudies zoals beschreven in een eerdere post ben ik begonnen aan het schilderij. Bijgaand het resultaat vlak voordat ik het moest inleveren.

I haven't been drawing much lately, no inspiration and not very satisfied with the things that I have attempted. In between Christmassy things, like browsing through my recently purchaised copy of the very inspiring "Julia Kay's Daily Portrait Project" (which I festively opened on Christmas Day), I did two very quick and rough self-portrait sketches on an iPad from a mirror-image. Self-Portrait Sketches

For my birthday I got a small portable mirror to practise drawing (self-)portraits as a present. My intention is to do a quick self-portrait sketch every week or at least every once in a while. Voor mijn verjaardag heb ik een kleine draagbare spiegel om te kunnen oefenen met het tekenen van (zelf)portretten kado gekregen. Mijn voornemen is om iedere week, of op zijn minst om de zoveel tijd, een snelle zelfportret schets te maken.
