Spring Shadows

Sketch with ink and watercolour working out an idea I had of playful, brightly coloured shadows cast from (ink) black wintry figures and objects. Roughly based on a (black and white) photo I came across on the internet. Ink and watercolour on grained paper (21 x 21 cm).

Ink & mixed media techniques

Quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs and the addition of mixed media techniques. In the upper sketch I used watercolour in combination with wax resist technique. In the lower sketch an overlay of rice paper drenched in watercolour; the rice paper turned out less transparant than I had expected. Perhaps I'll rework it at a later date. Ink, rice paper, watercolour, wax on paper. Snelle schetsen met inkt in combinatie met gemengde technieken.

Ink & Expression

Life drawing and painting, quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs and some occasional finger smudging. My aim was to gradually achieve a higher level of expression and abstraction. Ink on paper.

Abstracted Flowers

Painting holiday in the Morvan, day 1: Abstracted flower sketching and painting using mixed media techniques, focused on the essence of form and avoiding the suggestion of depth

We started out with a series of ink and watercolour sketches in combination with wax resist technique and then switched to painting from memory with a palet knife and line stamping technique. Mixed media, ink and watercolour in combination with wax resist technique on grained paper/Acrylic on canvas board (30 x 30 cm).

Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections

Colour studies for a painting based on a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels (made by Martin Beek) for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror".

Workshop landscape painting

Workshop landscape painting in Eys, focused on achieving depth or accentuation through colour (cold-warm contrast). I started out with a series of quick and rough watercolour studies and then did a few pastel drawings. My watercolour studies became increasingly abstract. Not particularly satisfied with the result, but still, here they are. Watercolour and soft pastel.

She's Got Eyes!

The "All Eyes on Kees van Dongen" exhibition in Rotterdam inspired me to do a "big eyes"-sketch, not in Van Dongen's style as such, but with some of the aspects of his work in mind, particularly the expressive, colourful portraits of women with big eyes. This watercolour sketch is the result. It's based on a photo of a young woman with striking eyes that I came across on the internet.
