Painting with broad spalter brush and bold brushstrokes

Life drawing and painting, focused on painting with a (broad) spalter brush and using bold brushstrokes. Model: Anne, who for sittings always wears one of her many extravagant (huge) hats (see a previous post for another example). The second one got a bit of a Japanese/geisha-look to it. Both unfinished. Acrylic on paper (55 x 73 cm).

Painting in stages, each showing through - Portrait à la Kokoschka

Life drawing and painting, result of second set of sessions focused on painting in four stages and different techniques (drawing brush, transparent layers, opaque brushstrokes, palette knife) with traces of each stage showing through in the final painting. I furthermore focused on achieving an (early) Kokoschka-like mood. Acrylic on canvas (60 x 80 cm).

Ink & mixed media techniques

Quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs and the addition of mixed media techniques. In the upper sketch I used watercolour in combination with wax resist technique. In the lower sketch an overlay of rice paper drenched in watercolour; the rice paper turned out less transparant than I had expected. Perhaps I'll rework it at a later date. Ink, rice paper, watercolour, wax on paper. Snelle schetsen met inkt in combinatie met gemengde technieken.

Ink & Expression

Life drawing and painting, quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs and some occasional finger smudging. My aim was to gradually achieve a higher level of expression and abstraction. Ink on paper.

Tearing forms, ink, reed pen/twigs

Life drawing and painting, focused on tearing forms from paper to capture mass and volume of short poses, followed by corrections and enhancement with ink and reed pen/twigs. Each pose was held for ten minutes, which consequently gave one just ten minutes to assess the pose, tear a form, paste it to a background and sketch with ink. Paper tearing forms and ink on paper.

Ink, reed pen/twigs and brush

Life drawing and painting, again focused on quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs, this time with the addition of brushwork for shadows and enhancement in general. Likeness was rather compromised for expression. Ink on paper.

Ink, reed pen/twigs

Life drawing and painting, focused on quick sketches with ink and reed pen/twigs. The charm of this technique is that compared to drawing with a fountain pen, one has far less control over the flow of the ink, leading to a broad variation in the thickness of lines and also the occasional blob of ink. Ink on paper.

Exhibition "Mirror"

This evening, the group exhibition with the theme "Mirror" in the town hall of Kerkrade was festively opened. It consists of a presentation of art works created by students at the local art school (VAZOM) and displays a wide and interesting variety of interpretations on the theme. Here's me beside my entry titled "(Sur)Real Reflections", based on a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels as described in a previous post.

Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections (2)

Final version of a painting that I made during the portrait & model class for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror", not based on life drawing and painting, but on a figure/subject of one's own choice from a photo. I chose a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels. After doing a few colour studies as described in a previous post I started on the painting and this is the result just before I had to submit. Acrylic on canvas (70 x 90 cm) with a copy of the original photo pasted in.
