Visages Nuages

Over the last few weeks I did a series of works on mini-canvasses (10 x 10 cm) for an art project in Amsterdam. For this occasion I tried out working with ink on canvas, applying the ink with a small dove feather I picked up in the garden. Applying ink with a delicate feather on a rough and small canvas gives very limited control over the flow of the ink leading to a broad variation in the thickness of lines and also the occasional spatter and blob of ink which adds to the effect.

I used several photos of an artist friend (Olivia aka illustra_illustrations) who has a collection of expressive profile photos on Flickr and Facebook which suited perfectly for what I had in mind. I didn't aim for achieving likeness, not even clear facial features, but for quick expressive sketches capturing mood, expression, attitude, etc. in otherwise vague facial sketches, which I themed "Visage Nuage" ("Cloud Face", in French the two words simply have a nicer ring together).

Design Competition: Cows On A Roll

This is my entry for the Brabantia "Pimp our print"-competition in their search for a new design for their bin/canister range. I noticed the competition just a few days before the closing date for entering (today) and quickly thought up a theme around one of my cow-sketches combined with the aspect of rotation/rolling of the cylindrical form of a bin/cannister, including the suggestion of a film roll.
