Exhibition "10x10artist"

On Saturday the first "10x10artist" exhibition by Atelier Open was opened in Amsterdam. 10x10artist is an art project set up by gallery Atelier Open in Amsterdam focused on offering a varied selection of artworks by international artists on 10 x 10 cm sized canvasses. The art works are exhibited during special occasions, starting in Amsterdam, then traveling to other places and countries. The works also are on display on the 10x10artist website. I participated with my "Visages Nuages" series, small abstracted portraits in ink drawn/painted with a feather, shown below.

Visages Nuages

Over the last few weeks I did a series of works on mini-canvasses (10 x 10 cm) for an art project in Amsterdam. For this occasion I tried out working with ink on canvas, applying the ink with a small dove feather I picked up in the garden. Applying ink with a delicate feather on a rough and small canvas gives very limited control over the flow of the ink leading to a broad variation in the thickness of lines and also the occasional spatter and blob of ink which adds to the effect.

I used several photos of an artist friend (Olivia aka illustra_illustrations) who has a collection of expressive profile photos on Flickr and Facebook which suited perfectly for what I had in mind. I didn't aim for achieving likeness, not even clear facial features, but for quick expressive sketches capturing mood, expression, attitude, etc. in otherwise vague facial sketches, which I themed "Visage Nuage" ("Cloud Face", in French the two words simply have a nicer ring together).

Apples

I've been enjoying Lies Goemans' daily miniature paintings ever since she started her Happy-mini-mail project and have had the intention for quite a while to someday do some myself but never got around to it. Rather dissatisfied with not having painted lately and with no real inspiration to start on something big I finally did do a quick miniature painting (10 x 10 cm) of some apples that were conveniently lying around.
