Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections (2)

Final version of a painting that I made during the portrait & model class for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror", not based on life drawing and painting, but on a figure/subject of one's own choice from a photo. I chose a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels. After doing a few colour studies as described in a previous post I started on the painting and this is the result just before I had to submit. Acrylic on canvas (70 x 90 cm) with a copy of the original photo pasted in. Portret & model-tekenen/schilderen was gedurende een aantal weken gericht op het maken van werken met als thema "Spiegel" voor een aanstaande groepsexpositie, dit keer niet naar model, maar op basis van een figuur of onderwerp naar eigen keuze. Ik koos hiertoe een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel. Na het maken van enkele kleurenstudies zoals beschreven in een eerdere post ben ik begonnen aan het schilderij. Bijgaand het resultaat vlak voordat ik het moest inleveren.

Queen Elizabeth II

Quick sketch of Queen Elizabeth II from a photo I came across on the internet for an exhibition at West Ox Arts Gallery in Oxford (UK). Artists were invited to submit portraits of the Queen in the context her upcoming Diamond Jubilee. Although I'm not a monarchist, I enjoyed participating in this portrait event and seeing the entries of other portraitists. Wax pastel on grained paper (21 x 21 cm). Joueurs de Cartes - Card Players

After doing some quick studies of individual card players (see my previous post with regard to this subject) I chose a different photo as a base for a painting of a group of card players, again a very characteristic black and white photo, this time by Alfred Eisenstaedt. I first did a quick wax pastel study and then set out to do a painting of it, starting with roughly breaking the white of the canvas with some greyed colours and then roughly sketching contours in bright green and adding some skin tones for facial features and hands. Contemplating on how to continue I rather liked the way how in several places the background colours coincided with and enhanced the contours and light and shadows of the figures and also how these figures seemed to faintly emerge from the canvas, so I decided to keep it in its rough state for now and perhaps just start on a new one.

Quick and rough iPad-sketch (Brushes App), experimenting with contrasting red and green colours. Chapel in the Woods - Leenderkapel

In the town where I live there is an early 17th century chapel which lies very picturesquely on top of a hill in the middle of the woods, known as the "Leenderkapel". I decided to do some sketches of it in different styles and with different techniques, just experimenting with colours, materials, moods, styles and techniques without focusing on an actual representation. De "Leenderkapel" is een pittoresk kapelletje op de top van een heuvel midden in een bos in Landgraaf. Over de afgelopen weken heb ik er een aantal schetsen van gemaakt, experimenterend met kleuren, materialen, stemmingen, stijlen en technieken, zonder gerichtheid op een realistische weergave.
