In the style of Kees Verwey

Life drawing and painting, the results of the past two weeks, focused on painting in the style of Kees Verwey. As always it was a race against time to try to finish the paintings. Acrylic on paper. Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter

Visited the "Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter" exhibition in The Hague. A nice retrospective of the work and lives of this group of artists. I became particularly interested in their work when I took an Open University art history course on Expressionism some time ago. Bezoek gebracht aan de "Kandinsky en Der Blaue Reiter" expositie in Den Haag. De expositie biedt een mooi overzicht van het werk en leven van deze groep kunstenaars en sluit ook goed aan bij het eerste deel van de cursus Expressionisme van de Open Universiteit die ik enige tijd geleden met veel belangstelling heb gevolgd.

Exhibition "Colour"

On Friday evening, the exhibition with the theme "Colour" in the town hall of Landgraaf was opened by the mayor. The exhibition consists of a presentation of paintings and sculptures created by students of VAZOM art school and artists from "Op de Bies", an institution for people with a mental handicap. Our portrait & model class was well represented, with special thanks to our inspiring teacher Annemiek Jongen! Art classmate René Fijten has made a nice overview of the paintings of our group and also a sketch of Annemiek amidst the crowd. Shown below is my entry. Op vrijdagavond werd de expositie "Kleur bekennen" in het raadhuis van Landgraaf geopend door de burgemeester. De expositie bestaat uit een presentatie van schilderijen en beelden gemaakt door cursisten van het locale centrum voor de kunsten (Vrije Akademie ZOM) en artiesten van "Op de Bies", een zorginstelling voor mensen met een verstandelijke handicap. Onze portret & model-tekenen/schildergroep was goed vertegenwoordigd, met speciale dank aan onze inspirerende docent Annemiek Jongen! Mede-cursist René Fijten heeft een mooi overzicht van de schilderijen van onze groep gemaakt alsook een schets van Annemiek temidden van de menigte. Onderstaand mijn bijdrage.

The Most Beautiful Museum in the World

Visited the exhibition "The Most Beautiful Museum in the World" in Essen. With these words Paul J. Sachs, American art historian and co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, described the Museum Folkwang during a visit to Essen in 1932. After the National Socialists took power a large part its collection was confiscated as "degenerated art" and sold. The exhibition aims at reconstructing, for the first time, the Museum Folkwang’s original collection. I thought it was an interesting exhibition and particularly enjoyed Franz Marcs "Grazing Horses IV (The Red Horses)" on loan from Harvard Art Museum as I had seen many of the other exhibited items during an earlier visit to Essen. A bit disappointing was the fact that, outside the exhibition halls, parts of the newly renovated museum were not quite finished, resulting in empty rooms without exhibited art. Bezoek gebracht aan de expositie "Das schönste Museum der Welt" in Essen. Deze expositie beoogt een reconstructie van de oorspronkelijke collectie van het Museum Folkwang tot 1933, waarna een groot deel ervan als "ontaarde kunst" door de nationaal-socialisten in beslag werd genomen en verkocht. Een beetje teleurstellend was het feit dat, buiten de expositieruimten, delen van het pas gerenoveerde museum nog niet ingericht waren, met lege zalen zonder tentoongestelde kunst tot gevolg.

Colour triptych Elle

Final version of the colour triptych that I made during the portrait & model class for the exhibition with the theme "Colour". It's based on a photo triptych (in black and white) that I came across on the internet and found very striking. As it didn't mention the name of the young woman depicted, I chose to name her "Elle". Acrylic on canvas (60 x 60 cm each). Kleurendrieluik geschilderd voor de expositie "Kleur bekennen" in Landgraaf.

Colour

The portrait & model classes of the past few weeks were focused on creating artworks for an upcoming exhibition in the town hall of Landgraaf, with the theme "Colour". Apart from some finishing touches and without the watercolours that at that moment were being framed, these are the results of our efforts. Portret & model-tekenen/schilderen was de afgelopen weken gericht op onze deelname aan de expositie "Kleur bekennen" in het raadhuis van Landgraaf. Hier de resultaten van onze inspanningen.

Shoes

Longing for winter to end so they can start enjoying a well-earned rest these guys prove to be patient models. Ink pen and watercolour. Hoge schoenen smachtend naar het einde van de winter ontpoppen zich als geduldige modellen.

Green earth technique

Life drawing and painting, introduction to the "green earth technique" in portrait and model painting, an old technique especially used to get lively flesh tones. Starting with an underpainting in green earth colour (mixed only with white and black for different shades of green) the painting is then completed using thin layers of transparent earth colours (we used ochre, burnt sienna, raw ombre). Unfortunately time was too short to actually finish them, but the results give an impression of what can be achieved with this technique. Acrylic on paper. Portret & model-tekenen/schilderen, kennismaking met de "groene aarde techniek", een oude techniek vooral gebruikt voor het bewerkstelligen van levendige huidtinten.

Sleeping Cat - Nemuri Neko Figurine

The figure of a sleeping cat has a special meaning and status in Japan and in Japanese art. Nemuri neko [眠猫] is Japanese for sleeping or peaceful cat but it also is the name of a famous sculpture of such a cat in the Shinto Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan and has been an inspiration to Japanese artists. The first time I came across such a sleeping cat figurine was in the house of Claude Monet in Giverny (now a museum). He had a special interest in Japanese art and received a sleeping cat figurine as a present from a Japanese. It lay very peacefully and cozyly on a cushion in the dining room and I found it very striking. I kept it in mind and later on bought one myself and now used it as a model for a watercolour. De figuur van een slapende kat heeft een speciale betekenis en status in Japan en Japanse kunst. Nemuri neko is Japans voor slapende kat, maar het is ook de naam van een beroemd beeld van een dergelijke kat in het Shinto Tosho-gu heiligdom in Nikko, Japan en is een inspiratie voor Japanse kunstenaars geweest. Ik kwam voor het eerst zo'n beeldje van een slapende kat tegen in het huis (nu museum) van Claude Monet in Giverny en het sprak me zeer aan. Ik hield het in gedachten en kocht er later zelf een, hier gebruikt als model voor een aquarel.

Flamenco

Inspired by some fine "mixed drawings" I saw lately (especially those by Ester Wilson) I set out to do something like that myself. With my old spanish guitar as the basis for an idea this is the result. It's actually not the loose and casual mix up I had intended and which I appreciate in the kind of works mentioned before. Geïnspireerd door diverse mooie "gemengde tekeningen" die ik de laatste tijd heb gezien (vooral die van Ester Wilson) wilde ik zelf ook iets dergelijks vormgeven. Met mijn oude Spaanse gitaar als basis voor een idee is dit het resultaat geworden. Het is eigenlijk niet de losse en ongedwongen mengeling die ik voor ogen had en die ik waardeer in de eerder genoemde soort werken.
