Chapel in the Woods - Leenderkapel

In the town where I live there is an early 17th century chapel which lies very picturesquely on top of a hill in the middle of the woods, known as the "Leenderkapel". I decided to do some sketches of it in different styles and with different techniques, just experimenting with colours, materials, moods, styles and techniques without focusing on an actual representation. De "Leenderkapel" is een pittoresk kapelletje op de top van een heuvel midden in een bos in Landgraaf. Over de afgelopen weken heb ik er een aantal schetsen van gemaakt, experimenterend met kleuren, materialen, stemmingen, stijlen en technieken, zonder gerichtheid op een realistische weergave.

Mirror: (Sur)Real Reflections

Colour studies for a painting based on a photo of a (multiple) reflection of myself in the window of the museum shop of the Magritte Museum in Brussels (made by Martin Beek) for an upcoming group exhibition with the theme "Mirror". Watercolour and markers. Kleurenstudies voor een schilderij gebaseerd op een foto van een (meervoudige) reflectie van mijzelf in het etalageraam van de museumwinkel van het Magritte Museum in Brussel voor een aanstaande groepsexpositie met als thema "Spiegel". Lisbeth

Another quick scrap paper sketch. I printed out one of Lisbeth's photos along with some others to sketch (don't like sketching from computer screen) and somehow hers turned out as just a tiny print on the bottom of the page. Did a quick scrap sketch of it on the same page. It's been lying around for a while now, wanted to do some rework on it, but decided to just leave it as it is. Workshop portrait painting: Painting in the style of Cézanne (2)

Second and final session of a portrait painting workshop focused on opaque painting with a spalter brush (painting in the style of Cézanne) as described in the previous post. The result is still quite unfinished, ran out of time. Acrylic on paper (50 x 70 cm). Colour theory, tonal colours (Martin)

Life drawing and painting, focused on achieving depth or accentuation through colour, in particular the use of tonal colours. Fourth session on colour theory, this time used for portrait sketching. To practise tonal painting we this time actually didn't sketch from life, but from self-chosen photos. As I've been wanting to do a painting of Martin for a while now (I did a quick digital sketch of him earlier, see my previous post on Martin), I chose one of his JKPP-photos to work from. I used cobalt blue as basic colour and mixed the rest from that. Not completely finished, ran out of time. I'd need to do some corrections to really catch the Martin I've come to know, but all in all I'm pleased with both the result and likeness. I tend never to continue with or rework art class material afterwards, just leaving it as it turned out during class as a reminder of that particular session. Acrylic on paper (55 x 73 cm).
