Ballpoint on telephone bill

With limited time for sketching, most of my sketches are just quick doodles done in between or even during other activities and often just on scraps of paper, envelopes, napkins or whatever is at hand at that moment in time. During a short break from working in the garden I did this quick and messy sketch on a telephone bill I recently received. Normally it would have ended up with most of the other scrap paper sketches in the waste paper bin, but on second thought I found the concept of a "ballpoint on telephone bill"-technique rather amusing, so I kept it and here it is. The person portrayed is Harry, a member of Julia Kay's Portrait Party on Flickr. See the next posts for more portraits I did of him. Met beperkte tijd om te tekenen, zijn de meeste van mijn tekeningen vooral snelle krabbels die ik maak tussen andere activiteiten door of zelfs tijdens die activiteiten en vaak gewoon op stukjes papier, enveloppen, servetten of wat dan ook op dat moment voorhanden is. Zo maakte ik tijdens een korte pauze van het werken in de tuin deze snelle en slordige schets op een onlangs ontvangen telefoonrekening die op tafel lag. Normalerwijs was deze samen met vele andere krabbels bij het oud papier beland, maar nader inzien vond ik het concept van een "balpen op telefoonrekening"-techniek wel grappig, dus besloot ik het te houden. She's Got Eyes!

The "All Eyes on Kees van Dongen" exhibition in Rotterdam inspired me to do a "big eyes"-sketch, not in Van Dongen's style as such, but with some of the aspects of his work in mind, particularly the expressive, colourful portraits of women with big eyes. This watercolour sketch is the result. It's based on a photo of a young woman with striking eyes that I came across on the internet. Geinspireerd door de "De grote ogen van Kees van Dongen" expositie in Rotterdam wilde ik een eigen "grote ogen" schets maken, niet in de stijl van Van Dongen als zodanig, maar wel met enkele aspecten van zijn werk in gedachten, met name de expressieve, kleurrijke portretten van vrouwen met grote ogen. Deze aquarel is het resultaat. Het is gebaseerd op een foto van een jonge vrouw met mooie, aansprekende ogen die ik op internet aantrof.

A Toast to Bonnard

After visiting the "Bonnard" exhibition in Wuppertal, I set out to do a playful sketch with some aspects of his work in mind, particularly colour, perspective, an interior (table) scene and a cat making an appearance. I used my mother's dining room as a base for a rough and distorted sketch of an interior and then added the rest from imagination. Ink pen and watercolour. Bonnard

Visited the "Bonnard" exhibition in Wuppertal. It gives a very nice insight into his life and development as an artist and of different aspects of his work. Like his use of colour and unusual perspectives and his fondness for intimate domestic interior scenes and uniting interior and exterior through open windows and doors. Many items on loan from around the world, quite a few coming from private collections. Bezoek gebracht aan de "Bonnard" expositie in Wuppertal, die een mooi inzicht geeft in zijn leven en ontwikkeling als kunstenaar en van de verschillende aspecten van zijn werk.

eGGheads on Newton

I've been intending to do some kind of cartoon based on some ideas I've had for quite a while, but didn't find it particularly easy to think up characters and a specific angle for such a cartoon. After a lot of doodling and trying things out I eventually came up with this cartoon named "eGGheads". The name of the cartoon of course refers to the shape of the characters heads, but furthermore it also hints on the definition of the word "egghead"; the Oxford Dictionary defines "egghead" as an informal noun meaning "a highly academic or studious person; an intellectual". In this sense the word is also used in a BBC general knowledge quiz show in which teams from all over the UK battle to beat the "Eggheads", a team of five highly regarded quiz and game show champions (including Mastermind and Brain of Britain). The concept of my cartoon is that of a brainy and rather fierce egghead character (a true representative of his kind according to the above definition) that likes to share (or is it just plain showing off?) his knowledge and meets up with some rather laid-back egghead characters (certainly no true representatives of their kind according to the above definition), perhaps best to be described as the bad eggs in the bunch. I hope you enjoy it. Ik liep al een tijdje rond met wat ideeën voor een strip en uiteindelijk is dit het resultaat geworden; vooralsnog alleen in het Engels.
